Christians failing to keep marriages together

Burlington, ON, Canada, October 18, 2004.  The rate of divorce among Christians is the same as that of non-church goers, says relationship coach John Kuypers.  Given the church's strong teachings against divorce, how does he explain this is disaster for the Christian community?  "Couples who are struggling in their marriages still feel a veil of shame in their churches, despite the enormous prevalence and widespread acceptance of divorce in North America," says Kuypers.  "As a result, couples 'come out of the closet' when it is too late - usually the day they are announcing their separation."

Citing Statistics Canada data, Kuypers points out that four out of ten marriages fail in Canada.  With 20% of Canadians as weekly church goers, that results in nearly forty Christian marriages falling apart every day.  Major U.S. surveys by the The Barna Group (www.barna.org) show that the rate of divorce among "born-again" Christians is identical to the community at large.

Even worse, 60% of young people under the age of thirty are beginning their first relationship in common-law, not in marriage.   Though statistics show that most will eventually get married, this same Stats Canada study shows that first common-law relationships followed later by marriage are twice as likely to end in separation & divorce as first married-only relationships.

Kuypers is the founder of a new organization dedicated to the prevention of divorce, called Steady Hands.  His unusual approach focuses on teaching men relationship coaching skills, without involving their wives.   In fact, he says that using his approach, doing it alone is mandatory for success.  He claims that one person alone can transform any relationship, even one that is already in a state of separation.

John Kuypers is backing up his claim in a new book called The Non-Judgmental Christian:  Five Lessons That Will Revolutionize Your Relationships.  In it, he reveals with candour and frank detail exactly how he reconciled his marriage twice, and what any man or woman can do if they have some faith to go with it.  The book is now available in all major bookstores and on-line sellers.
